After going to a live gig last Friday night, I really enjoyed it so want to do a lot more of it. I started looking around for local venues that host live music that I can go to. I want to try and get to as many as I can and see lots of the talented musicians that are around.
I saw that there was an event posted on Facebook that was to take place at The Soundhouse, and it was an album launch with a few supporting acts performing. This seemed like a good opportunity to see a few more people perform, and also check out the venue to see what it was like for photography.
Again I wasn’t sure of what equipment to take, but decided to take pretty much the same as I did the last time and that way I could see if the gear I was using would be up to the task over a few gigs.
I arrived there about 10 minutes before the first act was due to go on stage and there were very few people there, but this did give me the opportunity to get a seat near the front and to the side.
Once again I stayed in pretty much the same place all evening, and until I am more confident in the images that I am creating, I think that is how I will stay.
All of the acts were good, and most of them were just a guitar and their voice. Some of them had other instruments and other singers with them, but it was pretty stopped back. I would not hesitate to go and see any of the acts performing again and a couple of them I am actually planning in seeing again in the next couple of weeks.
I didn’t take that many photos, compared to last Fridays gig anyway, but at the minute I’m just trying to be a bit more consistent with getting decent shots that are at least in focus.
The lighting in the venue wasn’t the best, a mixture of green, blue, purple and red lights, constantly changing between the colours, that’s why quite a lot if the images have been converted to black and white. While I was there and looking at the images on the back of the camera, I thought that some of them looked terrible and was fearing that I would t have any usable images from the night.
It was another good night and I think the thing that really shows this is that after I got there, I didn’t realise what the time was until about 10.30pm as I was enjoying watching, listening to and photographing the act that were there.
With less images to go through on my computer when I got home, I had the processing done on the images that I chose to use pretty quickly.
Going forward, I still want to get to a few different venues but I mainly want to work on getting more of the images in focus and figuring out why the bad ones didn’t turn out as I’d expected them to. Hopefully experience can help with this and I can start to forget about what I’m doing with my camera and focus on capturing images that show emotion and energy from the artists.
