New Years Eve, a time when people celebrate the ending of one year and the start of a new one, making New Years resolutions and partying the night away.
For the past few years I have either been working around New Years, or just haven’t gone out for it. I noticed that there was to be a gig at The Musician on New Years Eve, with The Brandy Thieves headlining, so I purchased my ticket and thought I could then decide at a later date what my plans were be. I thought there was a possibility that it could sell out, and it eventually did, so it was better to have my ticket and then possibly not use it rather than decide I would like to go and then not be able to get a ticket.
As time went on, more acts were announced for this event and that made my mind up that this is where I’d be spending New Years Eve. Added to the lineup were GoldWater and Siobhan Mazzei, who are local favourites of mine, and Dan White, who I haven’t seen before but have heard of him. There were also going to be all sorts of things circus related, ad the title of the event was The Midnight Circus.
On the night I got there just after doors opening time and made my way inside to see who was about and chatted to a few people I knew who were already there until it was time for the music to start.
Performing first was Dan White, and as I’d never seen him perform before, so say he made an instant impression would be putting it mildly. Taking to the stage wearing suspenders and nipple tassles, I knew this was going to be something different, and with songs about various subjects that I’m not going to ruin for first time listeners, I suggest you get along to one of his gigs if you can and enjoy yourself, I know I did.
Next up, as a bit of a break from the music and a performer on the circus theme, we had ‘The Bearded Lady’ taking the stage for a hoop display.
Time for a bit more music now, and it was the turn of Siobhan Mazzei and her band to perform for the sold out crowd. An artist who I’ve seen perform numerous times, never fails to impress and just puts on one hell of a performance whether it’s her performing a solo set, or as is more common these days, with the full band behind her. Coming on stage to greet the packed crowd, I recognised many faces cheering then later on singing and dancing along to her songs, and with one track having a dance routine, how could the crowd not join in. Excellent set, and I’m sure I’ll see her performing again in the not too distant future.
There was another interlude now, with a fire display taking place outside, but as GoldWater were on stage next, I was chatting to them for a bit while they were setting up, and it was raining a bit outside so I wanted to stay indoors where it was dry.
One of my favourite live bands (another one was headlining this event) was up next, GoldWater, and they do put on an incredible live show. Even if you’ve heard their music and are a fan of their work, you really have to get to one of their live gigs to get the full experience. With a front man who never stays on stage, arm him with a long mic cable and who knows where he’ll go. Such a great band that I always try and see if they have local gigs.
Another quick break, as GoldWater finished and The Brandy Thieves setup, but before I knew it, the music was starting again. A band who I’ve been a fan of since I first heard them perform, back in this venue around five years ago, The Brandy Thieves have gone from strength to strength, selling out venues and putting on incredible shows for everyone in attendance. With an album being released in the last year, they have plenty of fan favourite songs, but constantly writing new material which seamlessly fits into their set.
With about ten minutes to go till midnight, the music stopped, the bar closed (so the bar staff could also celebrate the new year) and all the bands gathered on stage to countdown to midnight. The clock struck twelve and the whole place celebrated to auld lang syne being sung, and the music continued for a bit longer, with the party in full swing and everyone having a good start to the New Year.
This had been my first year going out to celebrate New Year, but if there is any event next time that comes close to the quality of this one, then I’ll be there.
Here’s to a great 2018, hope to see you all soon.
