It was only last year that I heard about Independent Venue Week, a weeklong series of gigs taking place around the country to showcase all the incredible venues and the people who put their time into organising the awesome shows that take place.
Last year I could only get to one show, which was Skinny Girl Diet headlining at The Soundhouse, and this year I wanted to try and get to a few more if I could. It ended up that again I only made it to one event, and this time it was Siobhan Mazzei and her band headlining at The Soundhouse. There were a couple of other events I’d thought about going along to, but things came up and I couldn’t make any of them. I’m going to try a lot harder next year, if it takes place again, even possibly going to a couple of gigs outside of Leicester in the week.
The bands performing on this night were Escapade, Annabel Allum and Siobhan Mazzei band. When I first heard the lineup for this show, I assumed that Annabel Allum would be headlining due to the other bands being based locally, and you normally have someone from outside the city headlining, but this wasn’t the case.
Up first this night we had local band Escapade. I haven’t seen these before, or really heard that much about them, but I was talking to someone before the gig started who is a fan and mentioned that they were quite good, they weren’t wrong. Strong opening performance to the night, playing some good songs, I’ll definitely have to check them out online and try to get to another gig sometime in the future.
Next up, coming off the back from touring Europe towards the end of 2017, and heading straight back out to Berlin the day after this gig, it was Annabel Allum. I’d heard good things about her, and again, another performer who could live up to expectations. Not really hearing much of her music before this gig, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I liked what I heard. I always have mixed feeling when I see a touring artist/band that I like, in one way it’s great that I have seen them, but knowing they aren’t a local band it then becomes tricky to find any other gig that I may be able to get to. I really enjoyed the set and I will certainly be keeping an eye on her future gig dates and will try and get along if there are any pretty close.
Headlining the evening was the Siobhan Mazzei band, and after all the gigs I’ve seen her perform at, I’m never left disappointed. From back in the days when she performed more as a solo artist, right up to now performing with her band, you always know it’s going to be a good show. Catchy songs performed by skilled musicians, in front of a packed crowd, what more could you want. This certainly won’t be the last time I see them performing, one of Leicesters really talented acts who could go far, I always try to get along to any of their gigs that I can.
And that was it for me and Independent Venue Week 2018. Only the one show, but it was a really good one. I hope that IVW 2019 gets announced at some point and then when individual gigs get sorted out I can start planning my week to attend more shows, both in Leicester and maybe a bit further out.
